Biography
Emily Laycock is a journalism student at the University of Georgia and a photographer based in Athens and Atlanta, Georgia. She is passionate about amplifying marginalized voices through visual storytelling.
As a Chinese adoptee raised in a predominantly white community, Emily developed a passion for fostering cross-cultural understanding. She believes storytelling—especially visual storytelling—creates essential connections and empathy across communities.
For the past two years, she has worked on the photo desk of The Red & Black, covering major events such as pro-Palestine demonstrations, Charlie Kirk’s You’re Being Brainwashed tour, and key moments of the 2024 presidential election season.
She further developed her reporting and cultural storytelling skills as a reporting intern for the Georgia Asian Times, where she covered Metro Atlanta’s Asian American community throughout the 2024 election cycle. Her reporting on issues shaping young Asian voters was published in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Emily is also an avid traveler who has visited 23 countries, she recently spent a semester abroad at National Taiwan University studying Mandarin and East Asian politics. In the future she hopes to combine her love of travel and photojournalism by pursuing a career as a documentary photojournalist, providing visual storytelling of social issues around the world.
